The KWayne5K Story
“Running Free with K-Wayne” is a charity 5K Run/Walk with 100% of the proceeds going towards the fight against mental illness. The Brain and Behavior Research Foundation (formerly NARSAD) has been dedicated to making this event a success! The race is in memory of Kyle Wayne DuBose, a young man who lost his life to mental illness. He was an amazing person who encouraged all to live better and to give more than they thought possible. He had a huge heart and enjoyed making other people laugh. He did what he thought was right instead of basing his life on what others thought. He is greatly missed by friends and family.
In 2009 his three sisters wanted to do something in memory of Kyle’s life and how much he fought to live. Due to Kyle’s love for running and his desire to be free of his illness they decided to start a 5K charity run in his memory. Their hopes were that the race could be free to all who participated, so they would be able to instead donate those funds to The Brain and Behavior Research Foundation in Kyle’s memory.
This race is not only in memory of Kyle but also for all of those who have lost their fight to mental illness or are now struggling every day to win! We pray that one day there may be a cure for all mental illnesses. When that day comes we know that The Brain and Behavior Research Foundation will be a huge part of that success!
We thank everyone who participated in the 2009 and 2010 K-Wayne 5K events and helped make each a success! It is because of you that we are able to continue with the 3rd Annual event and we look forward to surpassing all expectations!

Born in Wilmington, NC where the sun always shines – Sharli is much like her birth town. She is constantly smiling and doing something to make others laugh. In this way she is a lot like her brother Kyle. A woman who has strength, compassion, and adds a bit of blazing fire in all she does, she is driven and fun loving. MORE
Shanna Bates
Born at the beaches of North Carolina – Shanna is a woman who always sets for the sun. An amazing mother to her sweet daughter Grace and a beautiful and hardworking wife to her sweetie. Encouraging, compassionate, and kind Shanna constantly goes out of her way to do things for others. MORE
